If the World Were a Village
Ages 10+
Run time: 5 weeks
Base Price $125

Exploring the statistics of the world’s population by shrinking it down to the size of a village with 100 people.

New students use code NEWSTUDENT to receive a $25 discount.
Earth is teeming with humans, billions in fact!  Numbers so huge seem just an abstraction until we look first at what happens if we shrink the World's Population down to 100 people in a village.  Then students will scale back up and use math skills to fully grasp how the humans on planet Earth live. Students will study fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages, and complete projects that illustrate how numbers can be represented in different ways as the related to human populations.
Books
Before the first class, students are required to obtain a copy of “If the World Were a Village” by David J Smith.  It can be found at most libraries, bookstores, or online shops like Amazon or Half-Priced Books.

Class Dates and Times
Spring 2018
February 5 - March 5
Tuesdays at 10 am EST

Time Commitment
In addition to the reading (and book reading for this class is minimal since this is a picture book), students will be expected to explore approximately 2 hours of content per week outside of class (reading, watching videos) and spend 1-3 hours per week completing assignments (projects, essays, quizzes, and discussions). Since students vary greatly in their math skills, the time commitment for this class will also vary.  If your student is familiar with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, etc they will spend less time.  If you student is new to these concepts they will spend more time. Also, if this is your student’s first course, learning to navigate the Canvas LMS system may require time and parental assistance the during first couple of weeks of the course.

What Parents Need to Know
This is a math class. Unlike most Groovy Kid's classes, that involve a lot of writing or science, this class will have assignments that require learners to process numbers. Students will review (or learn) how to make pie charts and various kinds of graphs. They will work with compasses and protractors. They will also learn how to make charts on the computer. This is also a social studies class with an emphasis on what it means to be a global citizen.  Students will explore questions such as:
-Where does most of the world's population live?
-What percent of the world's population is Christian? Buddhist? Islam?
-What percent of the world has access to clean drinking water?

Technology Requirements
To participate in Groovy Kids classes students need:
1) A computer with either Windows, IOS, Android, Chrome, or Linux operating system.
2) A high speed internet connection (1.5 minimum Mbps, 2.5 Mbps for HD video).
3) Either a USB headset with microphone or telephone (mobile or landline will work)
4) A printer (optional but highly recommended).
5) A device, like a smart phone, that can take a digital picture.
6) Access to Google Sheets (it’s free!) or Microsoft Excel (it’s not free).
7) Access to word processing software like Microsoft Word, Pages, or Google Docs.  Documents must be submitted as either a doc, docx, or PDF file to be graded.

Other Supplies
Students will need a compass and a protractor to complete several of the math assignments. Students will also have the option of completing art projects that represent numbers in various ways. For this reason, students will benefit from having standard office/craft supplies like paper, pencils, markers, pens, scissor, index cards and tape.
